Couples Story
"My husband and I got married in Nantes, France on the 2nd April 2022 and we had a small ceremony at the town hall with 30 of our closest friends and family.
I am from New Zealand and my husband is French. We met working in a restaurant in Australia in 2019 and have had to endure 10 months of long distance due to covid restrictions.
Finally after months of separation my (now) husband surprised me with a one way flight to France from New Zealand when French borders opened briefly.
At the time this was extremely stressful as New Zealand’s borders were closed and I had no way of returning should our relationship not turn out as we were both hoping.
As both of our home countries have had borders shut during Covid we have spent the last 2 years moving around the world in order to be able to stay together. New Zealanders are only entitled to a 3 month tourist visa in France so we had to look for other solutions to remain together.
In the last year we have spent 3 months in France in a lock down, 5 months in Egypt , 6 weeks in Mexico and have since found new careers working on super yachts in the Mediterranean.
Flavien proposed to me in Dahab, Egypt in March 2021 on a mountain top at sunset. I said yes after saying “No” five times out of pure shock! We had a small fire on the mountain, drank beer and watched the stars together.
We decided to have a small intimate wedding but still chose to dress the part for the occasion as we didn’t know if we would ever get a chance to do a proper celebration again.
The Dress
"With all of the covid restrictions and being based predominantly out of Europe for the past year, I found it extremely difficult to find a wedding dress that I loved after having looked consistently online. After not finding anything and with only 2 weeks until our wedding day I decided to head to Paris to try on some dresses in a wedding boutique (very wishful thinking as some might say).
The 3rd dress I tried on was ‘the one’ and I walked out of the store with the dress in my arms the same day with only a couple of minor adjustments to make!"

"I found Freya rose after scrolling through wedding inspiration on Instagram and instantly fell in love with the simplistic pearl heels that I ended up wearing for my wedding day. They were the perfect addition to my simple but elegant wedding look. My husband wore a 3 piece suit but paired it with white trainers to keep the “casual” aspect to our wedding."
Unfortunately our wedding photographer couldn’t make it over to France last minute but we luckily we had my father over from New Zealand who was more than happy to snap a few photos of our day. He was fortunately a wedding photographer back in his younger days.
Any tips for future brides?
"Live streaming! We live streamed our wedding ceremony online for all of our family and friends who were not able to attend."- what a great way to make everyone who wasn't there feel apart of their special day!
